Sam's Grill & Seafood Restaurant first collaborated with Sayler Design in 2014. The goal was to reinvigorate a classic without drawing attention to change. The results were exactly as desired and drew critical acclaim across the board. The redesign was acknowledged for its subtle elegance and preservation. Sayler Design was an integral part of bringing design and functionality to a new era for a San Francisco institution. When Sam's decided to open a sports bar next door, they knew that Sayler Design would develop the perfect interior to not only meet our needs but help determine how best to utilize the space. Their work resulted in a unique, timeless and comfortable Tavern that helps attract a broad range of clientele. An empty shell has now become a warm, fun environment that speaks to a new generation with a reverence toward the past.
It was important that Sam's Tavern reflect the 1860's-era charm and refinement of the Grill while playing host to modern sports events on its nine large-screen TVs. Sayler Design understood what we wanted, refined the concept, and worked with my architect and contractors to implement the vision. In the Tavern, they used a modified version of the Grill's wainscotting and hat hooks, and augmented that traditional warmth with the addition of a coffered ceiling. The reclaimed wood floors, stained oak bar top, and live-edge community table bring both continuity and diversity to the space. The Tavern's signature brick wall, blackened in the 1906 earthquake fires, is showcased to its fullest by the backlit glass bar shelves, and is also reflected in the infilled brick added to the structural I-beams at the window.
The seating is comfortable and inviting, comprising custom-designed bar stools, backless stools at the community table, banquette seating and chairs at the dining tables, and a comfortable lounge space near the window. The lighting is sophisticated, defining and illuminating each space. Touches of brass at the hand and foot rails, door knobs, windows, and beer taps add brilliance throughout. From the entrance way to the bathrooms, every detail counts. I love that the view from the street shows both the sports theme (through the TVs and rare vintage sports photos) and the timeless decor. I invite you to see and enjoy Sam's Tavern for yourself. Cheers!
